LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Kennedy Kithuka was named Big 12 Runner of the Week Tuesday as announced by the conference. It marks the second time this season that Kithuka has been honored by the Big 12 as an athlete of the week.

The Thika, Kenya native and transfer from Wayland Baptist earned his third consecutive first place finish Saturday at the Kansas Rim Rock Classic meet. Kithuka finished first overall in the 8,000-meter race with a new course record and personal-best time of 22:26.70.

Kithuka, a two-time NAIA national champion at Wayland Baptist, has now won three consecutive meets with three course record times.

On Saturday, he finished 45 seconds ahead of second place finisher Zachery Mayhew of Indiana. The time was 1 minute and 12 seconds faster than his course record performance at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open meet in Lubbock on Sept. 14.

Texas Tech will return to action Oct. 13 when the squad heads to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete at the Chile Pepper Festival.
