LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country team is set to compete at one of the premier meets in the country Saturday when the squad travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to participate in the 2012 Chile Pepper Festival.
The meet, hosted by the University of Arkansas, is scheduled for Saturday with the men's race slated for 9 a.m. and the women following at 10:30.
"It's a great meet," head coach Jon Murray said. "It's a great opportunity for our teams to see different competition and to race on a fantastic course. It should be an exciting weekend for us."
The Red Raiders will run a 10k race while the Lady Raiders will follow and compete in a 6k race on the Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.
The meet, which is traditionally one of the largest in the country, is expecting approximately 4,800 runners between the collegiate and high school races and 5,000 fans in attendance.
Saturday's meet will be the final tune up for Texas Tech prior to the Big 12 Conference meet set for Oct. 27 in Austin, Texas.
Texas Tech is coming off an impressive performance at the Kansas Rim Rock Classic meet on Sept. 29 where junior transfer Kennedy Kithuka finished first overall in the men's race to capture his third victory of the season. Kithuka crossed the line with a time of 22:26.70 in the 8,000-meter race to lead the Red Raiders who finished fourth overall in the team standings.
Kithuka was later honored by the Big 12 Conference as the Men's Runner of the Week - his second conference recognition of the season.
The Lady Raiders finished 10th overall and were led by junior Chelsea Scott who finished with a personal best time of 22:40.70 in the 6k race.
