LUBBOCK, Texas - Kennedy Kithuka added to his already remarkable 2012 campaign on Tuesday as the junior was named the Big 12 Men's Runner of the Week for the third time this season. Kithuka finished first overall at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival meet at the University of Arkansas Saturday to remain unbeaten on the year.
With Saturday's performance, Kithuka now has four first place finishes in four meets while setting three course records in the process. The dominant season has not gone unnoticed as he has now won back-to-back weekly honors from the Big 12 to go along with his Sept. 18 recognition.
Kithuka crossed the finish line Saturday with a time of 28:53.00 in the 10,000-meter race - a full 1:20 ahead of second place finisher Girma Mecheso of Oklahoma State. His time was the fastest recorded at the Chile Pepper Festival since 1996.
The Wayland Baptist transfer who captured NAIA national championships in both the 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run is the first men's runner to earn Big 12 Runner of the Week honors three times in the same season since 2008.
His remarkable 2012 season has included first place finishes as the Texas Tech Open, the Red Raider Open, the Kansas Rim Rock Classic and the Chile Pepper Festival.
The Big 12 cross country championships now await Kithuka and the Texas Tech cross country program with the meet scheduled for Oct. 27 in Austin.
