LUBBOCK, Texas - For the second time this season, Texas Tech senior Kennedy Kithuka has been recognized by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the National Athlete of the Week.
Kithuka earns the honor on the heels of a dominant performance at the NCAA Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind. Saturday where he finished first overall by more than 30 seconds. With the victory, Kithuka became the just the third athlete since 2004 to follow an NCAA Championship crown with a victory at the NCAA Pre-National meet the following year.
"This is another great honor for Kennedy who is having an outstanding season," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. "Kennedy had a tremendous effort at the pre-national meet and this recognition confirms the fact."
Kithuka was named the National Athlete of the Week for the first time this season on Sept. 30 after winning the OSU Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
Kithuka has now won five-straight meets this season, and 12-straight in his decorated career. On Saturday, he came within one second of breaking the course record at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Indiana finishing with a season-best time of 22:52.78.
Kithuka is the first athlete to win the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honor twice in the same season. The honor was established prior to the 2013 season and recognizes outstanding performances by cross country and track and field athletes across the NCAA.
Kithuka and the Texas Tech cross country program now look towards the Big 12 Conference meet set for Nov. 2 in Waco, Texas.
