LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country program will begin its postseason run Saturday when the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders compete at the Big 12 Championships.
The Lady Raiders will open the meet with a 6,000-meter race scheduled for 10 a.m. with the Red Raiders following at 11 a.m. in a 8,000-meter race. Both races are set to be held at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
"It's going to be a great meet," three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year Jon Murray said. "We are very excited about the potential for both our men's and women's teams. We have had a great season leading up to this point and this meet will provide a great opportunity for all of our athletes to compete at a very high level."
The Red Raiders will be led by junior Kennedy Kithuka who enters the conference championship undefeated in the 2012 season with four first place finishes in four races. The two-time NAIA national champion has been named the Big 12 Runner of the Week on three occasions this year, the first athlete to do so since 2008, and will look to contend for the individual championship in the men's race.
Kithuka has recorded a season-best 8,000-meter time of 22:26.70 in a first place finish at the Kansas Rim Rock Classic meet on Sept. 9.
Meanwhile, the Lady Raiders will look to follow up an impressive performance at the 2011 Big 12 Championships in which former Lady Raider Caroline Jepleting finished first overall.
The meet is free to the public.
