IRVING, Texas - Sophomore Red Raider Sally Kipyego received the women's Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, as announced by the conference office. Kipyego recently became the first Texas Tech athlete to win the Big 12 individual cross country title. The honor marks the second year in a row that a Red Raider has received newcomer honors, as Kevin Chelimo was bestowed the accolade in 2005.

Kipyego led the Tech women's team to a second-place finish at the conference championship, becoming the highest ever for a Red Raider squad. The effort most recently aided the women to move to 17th place in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, up from 21st in the previous rankings.

Kipyego and the Red Raider cross country squads will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Mountain Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 11. For complete coverage, please visit www.texastech.com.
