Texas Tech Baseball Ranked 8th in Preseason Poll

DURHAM, N.C. - The Texas Tech baseball team was ranked No. 8 nationally in the 1998 Baseball America Preseason NCAA Division I Baseball poll, the publication released Monday. The poll was the second of its kind released, as The Sporting News ranked Texas Tech 17th in the nation earlier this month (December 17).

Texas Tech, which won the inaugural Big 12 regular season title last year with a 46-14 record, was one of four Big 12 teams listed in the rankings. The other three programs were Baylor (13th), Oklahoma State (16th) and Oklahoma (22nd).

The rankings were determined by members of the Baseball America staff. Stanford (45-20 in 1997) was ranked No. 1 in the country, followed by Miami Fla. (51-18) at No. 2 and two-time defending national champion LSU (57-13) at No. 3.

Practice begins for the Red Raiders on Thursday, January 8, 1998 at Dan Law Field. The first contest for Texas Tech will be on January 31 against the Red Raider alumni team. Regular season play begins on February 3 at New Mexico. Tech's first home game is on February 6 with a series against West Texas A&M.
