1990s Great Decade for Raiders

Any way you look at it, the 1990s have been a super decade for the Baseball Red Raiders.

Let's just count the ways:

  • A .682 winning percentage including 43-40-51-49 wins over the last four seasons when the Raiders lost no more than17 games in a season (183-61, .750);
  • half of the school's six Academic All-America honorees have come the last two years (Clint Bryantin both 1995 and 1996; and Jimmy Frush in 1996);
  • 27 havereceived their degrees in the 1990s, a feat which Larry Hays feels is even more important than:
  • 23 Raiders picked by professional baseball in the annual draft. Eighteen others havesigned free-agent contracts. And those figures don't include high school seniors who have signed to play for Tech but are drafted and decide to play professionally.

Since Texas Tech began tracking grades in the fall of 1986, here's how baseball ranks by semester against other men athletes:

Semester       Rank     GPA
Fall 1986         2     2.663

Totals            3.25* 2.

In the Fall 1995 semester, the baseballers were fifth overall -- counting both men and women GPA. During the 1990s only twice out of the 13 semesters did Larry Hays' crew have a lower Grade Point Average than the overall men's GPA.
