Texas Tech Defeats Southern Illinois 8-5
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Brad Ralston turned his longest stint on the mound this season, hurling 6 2/3 innings of relief in Texas Tech's 8-5 victory over Southern Illinois Friday.
Southern Illinois was the first team on the scoreboard, scoring a run in the first and second innings. Southern Illinois kept the offense going in the third, hitting back-to-back homers to take a 5-0 lead.
The Red Raiders began to rally in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to one. Tech would take the lead two innings later, scoring the tying run in the fourth and the go ahead run in the fifth. The Red Raiders never relinquished the lead after that, scoring insurance runs in the seventh and eighth while keeping SIU scoreless through the final six innings.
Ralston (1-0) earned the win while Troy Hatten (0-2) took the loss.
Jason Landrath was the offensive workhorse for the Red Raiders, hitting three-for-four with two runs scored. Chris Shuffield also provided a spark, hitting two-for-three with four RBI and his third homer of the year.
With the win Texas Tech improved to 4-1 while Southern Illinois fell to 0-4.
The two teams will continue their three-game series with game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale also at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at Dan Law Field.
