Red Raider's Takes Two In a Day From Southern Illinois

Game 1
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Southern Illinois in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back. Texas Tech lead by 4-0 before Southern Illinois could score its first run in the top of the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Red Raiders put the game away with their second back-to-back innings with scores, and second three run inning of the game. The offensive explosion put Southern Illinois down by the final score of 8-1.

Monty Ward's complete game was the first for a Red Raider pitcher so far this season. Ward was able to secure the victory over Southern Illinois in eight and a half innings of play. Ward fanned 13 batters, and permitted just four hits and one run.

Texas Tech came up big at the plate out hitting Southern Illinois 11-4. The Red Raiders hit three of those hits for extra bases. Outfielder Brandon Toro recorded a triple in his 2-for-5 for 3 RBI performance. Carter Ayers brought in a score with his double, and Jason Huth help two runners score with his double. Other Raiders that did well with the bat were Joe Dillon, who went 2-for-4, and Jason Lundreth's 2-for-4 performance.

Game 2
LUBBOCK, Texas - Southern Illinois got off to a quick start with a three run inning in the top of the first inning, but the Raiders put together four two run innings in the first, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings. The consistent offensive attack put Southern Illinois down 9-4 improving TTU's record to 6-1 on the season.

Texas Tech completed the sweep over Southern Illinois with another solid performance from both the mound and the plate. Jason Gooding improved his record to a perfect 2-0 with 14 strikeouts, a season high for the Raiders that was set at 13 in the previous game. Gooding's performance extends the TTU pitchers streak of 10 or more strikeouts each game this season. Jimmy Hooper finished off Southern Illinois striking out two of the last three batters. Hooper brought the strikeout total to 16 in the game and 29 on the day.

Texas Tech out hit Southern Illinois 16-6. The charge was lead by Joe Dillon who batted 3-for-4 including two home runs and 3 RBI. Left fielder, Jason Landreth had a 2-for-4 outing with both his hits resulting in extra bases. One for a double, and the other a triple. Jason Huth continued to hit well after going 2-for-3 including a double and RBI.

The Red raiders travel to Albuquerque New Mexico next Tuesday for another doubleheader against New Mexico.
