Hays Picks Up Win 1,100
LUBBOCK, Texas - In their first game as the nation's No. 1 ranked team, Texas Tech defeated Grand Canyon 20-8.
A crowd of 4,813, the largest ever to see a non-conference game at Dan Law Field, came out to see Tech coach Larry Hays get win number 1,100. Following the game, Texas Tech Chancellor John Montford presented Hays with two cakes, one for the team's No. 1 ranking and another for the milestone victory.
The Red Raiders pounded out 20 hits as all nine starters hit safely in the game for the ninth time this season. After being held scoreless in the first inning, Tech scored at least one run in their final seven at-bats. The Red Raiders put the game out of reach with five runs in the third and another six in the fourth.
Leading Texas Tech offensively was Brandon Toro, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and five runs scored. Jose Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a home run and a game-high four RBI.
Pitcher Jimmy Frush (4-1) started for Tech and worked the first five innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits to get the win.
