Top-Ranked Red Raiders Take Conference Game
Texas Tech Defeats Nebraska in First Game of Doubleheader
LUBBOCK, Texas - The #1 Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated conference rival Nebraska 9-3 in the first game of a doubleheader at Dan Law Field. The win clenches a berth in the inaugural Big 12 Conference Tournament for the Red Raiders, to be held on May 15-18 in Oklahoma City.
The Red Raiders took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Keith Ginter set the pace by leading off the inning with his 13th home run of the season, followed by a two run home run to left field by Jess Oliveras. Jason Landreth also hit his fifth home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the victory. Texas Tech has hit a home run in 36 games this year.
Tech pitcher Jason Gooding won his tenth game of the season while pitching a complete game. This marks the seventh consecutive year the Red Raiders have had pitchers in double figures in victories. Gooding threw ten strikeouts and allowed three runs, improving his record to 10-0.
"Gooding had really good stuff today as he usually does. He was the man out there. He showed why he's one of the top pitchers in the country," said Tech catcher Josh Bard.
The Red Raiders improved their record to 38-5 overall, 18-4 Big 12, while Nebraska's record fell to 22-26 overall, 4-15 Big 12. Tech will play Nebraska in the second game of a doubleheader tonight at 7:00 p.m. and again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
The nightcap of the doubleheader was suspended in the top of the eighth inning with the Cornhuskers at bat trailing 11-6. The game is scheduled to be resumed Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
After falling behind by a score of 3-1 in the early innings, the Red Raiders scored three runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Nebraska pulled withing one run in the top half of the fifth inning, but Tech responded in the bottom of the inning by stringing together six-consecutive base hits as they rallied for six runs.
Catcher Andrew Sawyers had singled and moved to second base on a walk by left fielder Clifton Durham with one out in the top of the eighth inning when heavy rains began to fall on Dan Law Field, forcing the suspension.
Should Texas Tech hold on to its lead in the game, Raider starter David Therneau, who went 6 1/3 inning, would pick up the win. Jimmy Frush was on the hill for Tech at the time that the game was suspended. Spencer Van Linge had retired the Red Raiders in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
