May 10, 1997 Aggies Take Second Game Over TechLUBBOCK, Texas - Making his first Big 12 Conference game start, Texas A&M's John Sneed tossed a five-hitter, while the Aggies erased a 3-0 deficit en route to a 5-3 win over Texas Tech in Lubbock Saturday night before 5,112 at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech (43-9, 23-6) and Texas A&M (37-18, 18-11) wind up the three-game series Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech clinched the regular-season Big 12 crown Friday night, coming back from a 6-0 deficit for a 12-9 win. The inaugural Big 12 Conference Tournament is next week at Oklahoma City. Sneed, who improved to 5-0, struck out nine and walked five. He ended Keith Ginter's school-record 29-game hitting streak and also halted Josh Bard's 21-game streak. Tech's Shane Wright, who entered the game 10-0, suffered his first loss in allowing four earned runs and 11 hits in 6.2 innings. Sneed didn't allow a Red Raider hit after Chris Shuffield's single in the fourth. He retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. Sneed struggled in the second and third innings as Tech picked up where it left off late in Friday's game. He gave up a two-out RBI double to Shuffield in the second inning. Brandon Toro added a two-out RBI single in the third and Jason Landreth followed to make it 3-0 with an RBI single. Down 3-0 in the fifth inning, A&M scored its first run on Matt Garrick's ninth home run of the year, a lead off shot to left center field. The Aggies cut it to 3-2 in the sixth with Sean Heaney's RBI single that scored Garrick. A&M grabbed the lead for good in the seventh inning with a two-out, two-RBI double by Jason Stephens. Patrick Malone's first career home run in the off Tech reliever Brad Ralston in the eighth inning made it 5-3. Brian Benefield went 3-for-3 for A&M, while Jason Tyner, Rich Petru, Garrick and Malone each had two hits. Shuffield was the lone Red Raider to garner two hits.
