Student Assistant Coach

Jake Brown will be back in a Red Raider uniform this season but in a completely different role. Brown, who played third base for Texas Tech last season, will serve the team in the capacity of student assistant coach in 2003.

Brown transfered to Texas Tech last season from Iowa State after the Cyclones announced that they would cut their baseball program at the end of the 2001 season. After an injury to starting third baseman Nick Blankenship midway through the season, Brown settled in and became a defensive force for the Red Raiders and helped lead the squad to a second-place finish in the Big 12 and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. He picked up All-Big 12 Tournament honors in back-to-back seasons at both Iowa State and Texas Tech.

The following is a breakdown of his play while at Texas Tech in 2002: Finished the 2002 season with a .327 batting average that included...53 hits...four doubles...two home runs...a grand slam...20 runs scored and a .940 fielding percentage...2002 RECAP...Transfered to Texas Tech from Iowa State...made three starts in the opening series with BYU at hitting streak...got the tying and winning runs against Nebraska in the second game of the doubleheader on March 23 while extending a current hit streak to eight games...snapped a 10-game hit streak against Missouri in the second game of a doubleheader on March 31...hit .300 against Kansas in the three-game series and recorded six assists...picked up two two-hit games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the three-game series...extended a current hit streak to five games in the final game of the series with Texas-Pan American...had an outstanding Big 12 Tournament as he hit .500 over the course of three games going 6-for-12 with six RBI...recorded his first career grand slam against Kansas State on May 24th...rewarded for his stellar play in the Big 12 Tournament by being named to the all-tournament team at third base

Brown is currently pursuing his degree in History.
