Played locally at Class 5A Lubbock Monterey High School where he played both football and baseball...coached by Fred Oliver...helped lead his team to a 29-7 record, a spot in the regional finals and a sixth place final ranking his senior year...his senior year he was named the District 2-5A Co-MVP, all-city, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal All-South Plains team, first-team all-state and also earned TPX All-America honors...statistically he batted .460 with eight home runs, 17 doubles and 43 RBI.
