Texas Tech Falls To New Mexico In Series Finale 9-6
Feb. 2, 2003 LUBBOCK, Texas - New Mexico's Dusty Young went 2-for-4 with three RBI and the Lobos hit three home runs to escape the Texas Tech Red Raiders 9-6 on Sunday afternoon to salvage a win out of the three-game series at Dan Law Field. With the loss, Texas Tech falls to 2-1 on the season while New Mexico (1-2) picks up its first win of the season. Despite today's loss, Texas Tech wins the series 2-1 by virtue of a 4-2 win on Friday and a 10-1 win on Saturday.
For the second straight day, junior designated hitter Evan Shahak homered in his first at-bat of the game as this time he sent a fastball over the left-center field fence to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead. Shahak finished the day going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two home runs and two runs scored.
With two outs in the top of the third, New Mexico's Dusty Young capitalized on a strong West Texas wind and hit a solo home run over the Texas Tech bullpen in left field, tying the game at 1-1. Junior second baseman Josh Haney put Texas Tech back in the lead in the first at-bat of Tech's half of the third when he hit a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence to make the score 2-1. New Mexico regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning when right fielder Joe Salas hit a two out single to right field that set up a two-run home run by Jeff Grady, giving the Lobos a 3-2 lead. New Mexico put the game out of reach by scoring three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 7-2 lead. The Lobos added two insurance runs in the ninth inning to take a seven run lead into the bottom half of the inning. The Red Raiders made a comeback in the bottom half of the ninth as Cody Fuller singled to right field and junior Sean Alexander scored to pull Tech within six. With runners at first and second Evan Shahak connected on his second home run of the game, a three-run blast over to left-center field to pull Tech within three. Lobo reliever Joe Salas put the game in the books as he retired Brent Fossum in the next at-bat with a fly out to center. Senior pitcher Nathan Fouts suffered the loss for Texas Tech after giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Fouts recorded seven strikeouts on the afternoon in 6 2/3 innings of work. New Mexico reliever Matt Bullen (1-0) earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing just one hit. Texas Tech returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when the host the West Texas A&M Buffaloes at 3 p.m. |
