Red Raiders Stampede The Buffaloes, 21-4

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech set a new school record for most runs in an inning by scoring 12 times in the fifth and the Red Raiders pounded out 17 hits to ease by West Texas A&M 21-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field. With the win, Texas Tech improves to 3-1 on the young season while West Texas A&M falls to 0-3 on the year. The Red Raiders stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Tech pounded out four hits and took advantage of two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Tech tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third on three hits and three walks. Texas Tech tagged the Buffalo pitching staff for a school record 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 20-0 lead. In that inning, Texas Tech notched seven hits and six walks and got a grand slam from junior designated hitter Evan Shahak. The grand slam was the first of the season by any Tech player. West Texas A&M plated three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull within 16 but Tech relievers Brock Johns and Juan Razo ended the game on back-to-back shutout innings. The Red Raider offense was paced by designated hitter Evan Shahak as he went 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Junior right-hander Jeff Karstens (1-0) earned the win in relief for Texas Tech as he threw two innings allowing one hit and struckout two batters. Raymond Bergara suffered the loss for West Texas A&M and falls to 0-1 on the season.
