LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior second baseman Josh Haney led Texas Tech with four RBI while Jeff Karstens pitched four solid innings of relief to give Texas Tech a 7-3 win over San Diego on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at Dan Law Field.

With the win, Texas Tech improves to 5-1 on the season while San Diego falls to 2-6.

San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning and then made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth when Joey Prast scored on a passed ball by Tech catcher Cooper Fouts.

Tech second baseman Josh Haney put Texas Tech in the lead in the bottom of the fourth when he cranked out his second home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left-centerfield fence. The Red Raiders tacked on two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by shortstop T.J. Bruce and designated hitter Evan Shahak.
 

 

Leading 5-3 in the top of the fifth, Tech surrendered what turned out to be San Diego's last run of the game on an RBI groundout by Tony Perez that plated Ben Quinto who led off the inning with a single through the left side.

The Red Raiders added insurance runs in the bottom of fifth and sixth innings on RBI singles by Clint McGill and Josh Haney respectively.

Junior Jeff Karstens came out of the bullpen to record his first save of the season as he pitched four solid innings allowing just two hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Senior right-hander Nathan Fouts picked up his first win of the season after pitching five innings allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters. San Diego's Justin Blaine suffered the loss for the Toreros after giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks through 3 1/3 innings of work.

Texas Tech will go for the series sweep on Sunday at Dan Law Field with senior right-hander Dusty Buck taking the hill for the Red Raiders. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
