Texas Tech Baseball Defeats Long Beach State, 5-3|

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior righthanded pitcher Shane Wright allowed only three runs in a nine-inning complete game and junior shortstop Junior Rodriguez hit a two-run home run (his fifth in the first seven games) to lead Texas Tech to a 5-3 first-game victory against Long Beach State Friday at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech improves to 5-2 and on the young season while Long Beach State drops to 1-4 overall.
Wright (2-0) allowed only one earned run and two walks and struck out six batters in nine innings pitched. The performance was Wright's fifth complete game of his career. Visiting Long Beach State nailed 10 hits off his pitching but many of the hits were either infield hits or short flyballs.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the sixth inning, Rodriguez drove his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence on an 0-1 pitch. The shot drove home two runs to put the Red Raiders up 5-3. Wright did the rest, allowing only two hits over the final three innings. Long Beach State starter Daryl Grant (1-1) earned the loss. Texas Tech collected only five hits on the day. Catcher Josh Bard had two hits and two runs scored, second baseman Kevin Jordan registered a hit and RBI and Miles Durham went 1-3 with a runs scored.
Game two of the three game series is at 12 noon tomorrow at Dan Law Field. Tech will pitch Jesse Cornejo (1-0) while Long Beach State will counter with Jason Berni (0-1). The final game of the series is at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
