Feb. 15, 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior shortstop Junior Rodriguez drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a single over the Long Beach State rightfielders' head to give Texas Tech a 5-4 extra innings victory Sunday at Texas Tech's Dan Law Field. The victory completes a three-game sweep for Texas Tech of Long Beach State, Tech's second sweep of the season. The win improves Texas Tech to 7-2 on the season while Long Beach State drops to 1-6.

With one out and Jason Landreth on third and Kevin Jordan at second in the 10th inning, Rodriguez ripped a 3-2 pitch over the 49ers' rightfielders' head to drive home the winning run. Both Landreth (single) and Jordan (hit by pitch) advanced to third and second on a wild pitch by Long Beach State reliever Jason Marr.

Reliever Brad Ralston struck out five, allowed only two hits and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the victory in relief. Starter Monty Ward pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out 10 and allowed seven hits and three earned runs in a solid outing.

Rodriguez ended the game with hits in five at-bats. Red Raiders with one-hit games included Mark Austry (1-5), Jason Landreth (1-4), Josh Bard (1-4), Jason Huth (1-3) and Ryan Ruiz (1-3). Second baseman Kevin Jordan continued his nine-game hitting streak with a 1-4 performance. Jordan is the only Red Raider to hit safely in every game this season.
