Head Coach Dan Spencer
On the season-opening win against Jacksonville State:
"The win is the important thing. I thought (Chad) Bettis threw great. I thought we were interested early, offensively, for about four innings and then their soft left-handed pitcher really gave us some trouble because we didn't make the adjustments we needed to make. I thought we might have gotten a little complacent and thought the game was over. I just reminded them, in college baseball, you play nine innings and as well as we played defensively and with great pitching the truth is they (JSU) get one more hit and they potentially have the tying run at the plate. That's how fine the line is. So we just have to stay in the game and concentrate more, offensively, the whole game, and we will be fine."
On OF Barrett Barnes' performance:
"Barrett (Barnes) was very good. I thought we also had a good night out of (Joey) Kenworthy, offensively. Barrett's a special kid. He can hit. The key for him will be, it's easy when it's going good, but how will he survive when he's 0-for-8 one night, because everyone has those days. But he's tough enough and he's a great player, he will be fine. We can protect him with older guys right now, so he's really going to be great."
On RHP Chad Bettis' performance:
"I thought he was outstanding. He was very efficient early. He had one long inning his last inning and that's when we got him out. We liked that he had plenty of gas and juice left though. In the end, we got Jay (Johnson) in the game at the end. We were hoping we wouldn't have to but we felt like we needed him in there to nail it down. All in all, it was a good win."
OF Barrett Barnes
On his first collegiate at-bat, a homerun:
On the team's performance:
"The first at-bat was really just trying to shake off the jitters and stuff for it being my first time at bat in Big 12 baseball. Coach gave us the hit-and-run signal so I was just looking for that. But then I got behind in the count and sat on a curveball, the pitch I was looking for. So it was a good at-bat. The second at-bat was a hit-and-run again and I caught the fastball, got a hold of it and went with it."
"(Chad) Bettis was lights-out tonight. Joey (Kenworthy), (Nick) Popescu and (Garrett) Totten made a lot of great plays too. It was just a solid game all around."
On his personal expectations going into today's season-opener:
"I'm just happy to be here right now. I thank God for the situation I'm in and the opportunities I have. I'm just out here to have fun and enjoy myself."
RHP Chad Bettis
On his performance:
"It felt great. I felt good. (Jeremy) Mayo called a great game behind the plate. The guys made a number of plays behind me. Barrett was amazing offensively tonight. Everything just seemed to go right today."
On the team's offensive performance:
"It's nice to have that behind me. It's so nice to go out there and sit them down defensively and then come back in the second inning and have a lead like that. It makes my job a lot easier."
On head football coach Tommy Tuberville's first pitch:
"It was amazing. It should have been a strike."
