Richardson, Leverton Lead Tech Past Eastern New Mexico, 16-0|
Feb. 20, 2006
LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior left-hander Dustin Richardson pitched six no-hit innings and freshman first baseman James Leverton went 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead Texas Tech to a 16-0 win over Eastern New Mexico on Monday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
Today's game was played as a makeup game after losing two of three games against St. John's to inclement weather conditions this past weekend. With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 6-3 on the season while Eastern New Mexico falls to 10-2.
Texas Tech pitchers Dustin Richardson, Jason Seefeld and Brian Cloud had a combined no-hitter through 8 2/3 innings before Eastern New Mexico was able to get back-to-back hits from Justin Gee and Mike McDuffie. Gee broke up Tech's first no-hitter attempt since March 20, 1990 when Jeff Peck, Kevin Kirk, Brian Boesinger and Kurt Shipley combined for a no-hitter against College of the Southwest.
The Red Raiders got a stellar effort on the afternoon from senior left-hander Dustin Richardson (1-0) who tossed six shutout innings without allowing a single hit and struckout a career-high 10 batters. Richardson just missed his career long outing as his 6 1/3 innings against Nebraska last season still stands.
The Tech offense struck early and often in the contest as Tech pounded out 16 runs on 18 hits (second most this season) and also played its first error free game of the year. Freshman first baseman James Leverton led the Red Raider offense and had a career day with four hits and five RBI. Fellow freshman Roger Kieschnick went just 1-for-4 at the plate but tallied four RBI and now has 18 (team-high) on the year.
Texas Tech returns to action on Thursday when the Red Raiders open play in the 2006 Cox Communications Midland Collegiate Classic at Citibank Ballpark in Midland. The Red Raiders will face Dallas Baptist at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Texas-Arlington at 5 p.m. on Friday and Oral Roberts at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased by calling the Midland Rockhounds at (432) 520-2255.
