Tyler Neslony's grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Texas Tech to a 7-2 series-clinching win over Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd of 3,347 at Rip Griffin Park.
With the win the Red Raiders improved to 5-1 overall while Oral Roberts slipped to 1-4. Neslony's bat was huge for the Red Raiders for the second consecutive day as he finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored. He was 2-for-3 in the opener on Friday afternoon and is now tied for the team lead with three multiple-hit games.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom half of the sixth, Neslony belted an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right field to give Tech a 5-1 lead while collecting his second grand slam of the season. He is the first Red Raider since Roger Kieschnick (San Francisco Giants) in 2008 to belt two grand slams in a single season.
Later in the sixth, designated hitter Ryan Long drove in another run with an RBI single to center that gave the Red Raiders a five-run cushion (6-1). Texas Tech and ORU traded solo runs in the seventh before Tech reliever Ryan Moseley sealed the victory by shutting out the Golden Eagles in the eighth and ninth.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Withrow tossed five strong innings allowing just one run on two hits and struckout six in a no-decision. Junior right-hander Corey Taylor (1-0) earned the win in relief as he allowed one run on four hits over two innings of work.
Five Red Raiders piled up multiple hit games on the afternoon while Jake Barrios plated two runs.
Texas Tech will go for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon as they host the Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
