Texas Tech Rallies For 10-9 Win Over Seton Hall
Feb. 23, 2002 LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech rallied from an 8-0 deficit to claim a 10-9 come-from-behind win over the Seton Hall Pirates on Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd of 3,827 at Dan Law Field. With the win Texas Tech improves to 12-4 on the season and takes a 2-0 lead in the three-game series while Seton Hall fell to 2-3. Seton Hall led off the game with a bang as the Pirates got two three-run home runs by Todd Crawford and Ed McDonnell. The Pirates got five hits in the inning and took advantage of a key error by left fielder Jon Slack. The Pirates took an 8-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run inside-the-park home run by Mike Bascom. Bascom's ball hit off the left center field fence and Tech center fielder Tyler Carson made a diving play into the wall and was unable to recover allowing Bascom to get the home run. Texas Tech got its first run of the game in the bottom of the second when the Red Raiders loaded the bases and senior Bryon Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Austin Cranford. Tech was unable to generate any more runs in the inning as Tyler Carson grounded into a double play to end the Tech scoring threat. The Red Raiders cut Seton Hall's lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning as Tech scored three runs on three hits bringing the score to 8-4.
Sophomore Brent Fossum got Tech's rally going in the bottom of the fifth when he pinch hit for Austin Cranford after Seton Hall brought in left-hander Sam Santmyer. Fossum took a slow moving fastball and dropped it over the left center field wall scoring three runs bringing Tech within one. Freshman Madison Edwards got his first career triple on a ball that bounced off the netting of the Tech scoreboard that plated two more runs. Junior Joel Buchenauer got his first hit of the series on a double that went down the left field line scoring Edwards from third and putting Tech ahead 10-8.
Seton Hall put up its first run since the second inning when Todd Crawford hit a solo home run over the right center field wall bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of the Red Raiders. Elvys Quezada came out of the Seton Hall bullpen in the seventh inning and retired five of the next seven Tech batters putting the brakes on Tech's offense keeping the Pirates within one heading into the top of the ninth inning. Casey Grimm led off the top of the ninth for Seton Hall with a single to left field but Chad Ertel retired the final three batters to end the game giving him his second save of the season. Matt Harbin picked up the win for Texas Tech as he pitched 5 1/3 stellar innings giving up just one run on four hits and struckout four. Mike Santmyer took the loss for Seton Hall and fell to 0-1 on the year. Texas Tech and Seton Hall will complete the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field with first pitch coming at 1 p.m. |
