No. 17 Texas A&M Edges No. 22 Texas Tech 7-6
March 1, 2002 COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M's Ty Garner got an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Aggies a 7-6 win over Texas Tech in the conference opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Olsen Field in College Station. The Red Raiders (13-5) took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman right fielder Madison Edwards hit a two-run single to left field with the bases loaded. Edwards plated Jon Slack who led off the game with a single to left field and Austin Cranford who picked up a walk from A&M starter Justin Moore. Slack's lead-off single extended his current hitting streak to 12 games. Texas A&M's Tim Petru tied the game in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run that cleared the screen over the left field wall. The Aggies took the lead on a single by designated hitter Erik Schindewolf that plated Justin Pouk who doubled in the previous at-bat giving A&M a 3-2 lead. Senior Nick Blankenship tied the game for Tech in the top of the third with a double that went off the right field wall. Willie Durazo advanced to third on the play but was able score thanks to an error the Aggie right fielder on the throw. Tech took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by Willie Durazo that plated Jon Slack putting Tech ahead 4-3. Slack kept Tech alive in the inning as he doubled off the center field wall with two outs. Scooter Jordan picked up his first hit of the afternoon at the next at-bat putting runners at the corners.
The Red Raiders scored two more runs in the top of the fifth with two outs as Bryon Smith started the run with a double to left center field. Gera Alvarez drew a walk in the next at-bat and Joel Buchenauer picked up his first hit of the day on a single up the middle that scored Smith and advanced Alvarez to third. Alvarez plated Tech's second run of the inning on a wild pitch by Aggie reliever Zach Dixon.
Texas A&M rallied in the bottom of the sixth by scoring two runs on three hits to bring the score to 6-5 in favor of the Red Raiders. Steve Rowe, who replaced Chris Phillips in the sixth, gave up his first earned run of the season when A&M's Ty Garner tied the score with a solo home run over the left field wall knotting the score at 6-6. Ty Garner hit a one-run single in the bottom of the 10th to give Texas A&M the win 7-6 marking Tech's first defeat in extra innings this year. Steve Rowe (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season while Matt Farnum picked up his second win of the year for Texas A&M. Tech and A&M will play the second game of a doubleheader at 4:45 p.m. before wrapping up the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday. |
