LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Scooter Jordan came up big for the second straight day as he delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as Texas Tech won 7-6 in extra innings on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader.

Texas Tech improved to 12-4 on the season while Northern Iowa fell to 0-5.

Northern Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Brian Kobliska and Tyson Hanish delivered back-to-back doubles. Armando Lara plated the final run of the inning with a single into shallow center field.

The Panthers extended their lead to 3-0 in the third on two hits and a walk by starter Juan Razo. Razo brought in the run on balk call by home plate umpire Curtis Alexander.
 

 

Senior left fielder Scooter Jordan got Tech on the board when he picked up just the second hit of the day for the Red Raiders when he deposited a two-RBI double into right field that plated T.J. Bruce and Clint McGill who both walked in the inning. Tech added another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Sean Alexander that scored Evan Shahak all the way from first.

Northern Iowa pushed their lead to 6-3 by getting a two-out two-run rally in the top of the seventh on one walk and two hits.

The Red Raiders rallied in their half of the seventh as Tech scored three runs on four hits. Pinch hitter Christian Colonel delivered a two-out bases loaded single that tied the game at 6-6. Northern Iowa was able to retire T.J. Bruce on an infield groundout to send the game to extra innings as the first game of this doubleheader was scheduled for seven innings.

Tech reliever Corey Gerstner came in the game in the top of the eighth and retired the side to give the Red Raiders the chance to win in the bottom of the inning. Junior first baseman Doug Beck drew a one-out single and was then moved to second on a balk by Northern Iowa reliever Drew Wold. Clint McGill moved Beck to third on a fly out to center field giving Tech a runner at third with two outs. Scooter Jordan came up big for Texas Tech for the second straight day as he delivered the game winning RBI single straight up the middle to give Tech the 7-6 come-from-behind win.

Corey Gerstner (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Texas Tech while Drew Wold (0-1) suffered the loss for Northern Iowa.

Texas Tech and Northern Iowa began the second game of a doubleheader at 4:05 p.m.
