No. 21 Texas Tech Survives Southwest Texas 9-8|

LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 21 Texas Tech fought off an eight-run rally by Southwest Texas in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up a 9-8 win over the Bobcats on Friday night at Dan Law Field.
Texas Tech (14-5) stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as the Red Raiders tagged Southwest Texas starter Mark Davis for three hits. Sophomore outfielder Madison Edwards drove in two runs in the inning with a two-RBI single to right field.
After two scoreless innings, Texas Tech tacked on four more runs in the fifth as the Red Raiders pounded out five hits including a two-RBI double by third baseman Clint McGill.
Texas Tech starter Steve Gooch, who had pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just five hits and struckout five, got hit hard in the eighth by Southwest Texas as the Bobcats scored six runs on seven hits. The Bobcats chased away Gooch after just getting one out in the inning and giving up seven straight hits.
Southwest Texas got a home run in the top of the ninth from Ignacio Suarez to pull the Bobcats within two. Later in the inning, Tech reliever Aaron Jones balked home Jacob Spencer to make score 9-8 before retiring Mark Cooper with a fly out to right field to end the game.
Junior Steve Gooch picked up the win for Texas Tech and improved to 3-1 on the year. Mark Davis took the loss for Southwest Texas and fell to 0-2.
Madison Edwards paced the Texas Tech offensive attack by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a game-high three RBI.
Texas Tech and Southwest Texas will play the second game of the three-game series at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Dan Law Field.
