Texas Tech baseball defeats Texas, 6-3

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech used a one-earned run pitching performance from junior Shane Wright along with 15 hits to defeat Texas 6-3 at Dan Law Field Friday evening. The game was the first of a three-game Big 12 series between the two schools. Texas Tech improves to 12-7 (2-2 Big 12) on the season while Texas falls to 8-9-1 (0-1 Big 12).

Texas struck first with three runs in the third inning as it used an error and two doubles to gain a 3-0 lead. But Texas Tech starter Shane Wright (4-1) shutdown the Longhorns for the rest of the evening as he pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed 11 hits, 3 runs (one earned), no walks and struck out three in earning the victory. Reliever Brad Ralston pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his second save on the season.

The Red Raiders battled back from the 3-0 deficit. They scored one run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by senior Jason Landreth. Tech scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by freshman Miles Durham and an RBI bunt single by junior Ryan Ruiz. Texas Tech went ahead in the fourth inning when Ruiz bunted for another single and junior Kevin Jordan scored on a Longhorn error. The final two insurance runs came in the eighth inning on an RBI single by freshman Brennan Burns and another Texas error.

Several Red Raiders had multi-hit days. Sophomore Mark Austry went 3-4, Ruiz finished with a career-high three hits (3-4 on the day), senior Keith Ginter went 2-4, Durham finished 2-4 and Burns went 2-5.

Game two of the three-game series is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
