Tonight's game marked the first-ever meeting between Texas Tech and UNC Asheville.
Freshman left fielder Roger Kieschnick had his Big 12 leading 13-game hit streak come to an end tonight. Kieschnick was 0-for-5 at the plate with no RBI.
Sophomore catcher Matt Smith is now tied with Tyler Reves for the team lead in home runs as he cranked his fifth of the season tonight in the first inning. Smith hit a three-run homer off Tim Johnson and all five of his homer runs this season have been multiple-run blasts.
Freshman first baseman James Leverton picked up his fourth home run of the season and second in as many days. Leverton hit a three-run home run in Tuesday's loss at UNLV and again tonight in the second inning to give Tech an 8-1 lead.
Junior Randy Gattis gave up two earned runs on the evening which equaled his entire season total coming into tonight's game. Gattis now has a 2.04 ERA in 17 2/3 innings of relief along with a 2-0 record and three saves.
Texas Tech improved to 2-5 when being out-hit by an opponent. UNC Asheville out-hit the Red Raiders 15-11.
The Red Raiders are now 10-0 on the season when leading after the seventh inning.
