Ramos Earns Fourth Straight Win, Tech Drops TAMU-CC 9-4|

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Sophomore AJ Ramos recorded his fourth straight win while freshmen Joey Kenworthy and Taylor Ashby each drove in two runs to lead Texas Tech to a 9-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first game of the 2007 Whataburger College Classic at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.
The win moves Texas Tech's overall record to 14-6 while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to 12-7.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the Red Raiders got on the scoreboard when junior center fielder Doug Thennis laced an RBI triple to the gap in right center field. Thennis' triple, his first of the season, drove in freshman designated hitter Taylor Ashby who reached on a lead off walk.
A four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth gave Tech a 5-2 lead and the Red Raiders never looked back. Matt Smith led off the inning with a double down the left field line and Kyle Martin laid down a perfect bunt single to give Tech runners at the corners and no outs. Geoff Byrns scored Smith with a double and freshman second baseman Joey Kenworthy drove in two runs with a hard hit single to right.
Leading 6-2 after the sixth, the Red Raiders tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the seventh to grab a 9-2 lead. Taylor Ashby picked up his first hit of the game with he punched out a two-run single through the left side.
Sophomore pitcher AJ Ramos (5-1) earned his fourth straight win for the Red Raiders as he recovered from a shaky start and went on to log six innings of work. He allowed just two runs on four hits and struckout eight. Travis Young picked up his first career save as he pitched the final four innings allowing two runs on five hits and struckout four. Will Norman was charged with the loss for TAMU-CC as he surrendered five runs on six hits over 3 1/3 innings.
Texas Tech continues play in the 2007 Whataburger College Classic on Saturday evening as the Red Raiders will face the eighth-ranked Rice Owls at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game are available for purchase at the Whataburger Field Box Office.
