Tech Holds On For 4-3 Win Over Texas, Takes Series 2-1
March 11, 2001 AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Tech held off a ninth inning rally by the Texas Longhorns to win 4-3 in front of 4,210 fans at Disch-Falk Field. With Sunday's win, Texas Tech earned the series win 2-1 and has now won the regular season series with Texas each of the last five years. Texas Tech improved to 14-10 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12 Conference while Texas Fell to 13-11 and 4-2 in league play. Tech was able to hold off Texas in the bottom of the ninth as the Longhorns tallied back-to-back home runs off the bats of Kasey Baker and Jeff Ontiveros. The home runs were first of the season for both Baker and Ontiveros and brought the score to 4-3 in Tech's favor. Senior Blake McGinley was able to get Omar Quintanilla to fly out to center field that ended the game. Texas Tech scored the first run of the game when Tyler Carson hit an RBI single to right field that plated Kerry Hodges giving Tech the early 1-0 lead. Texas tied the game in the fifth inning on Texas' third infield bloop hit of the series. The Red Raiders took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning as the Tech offense scored three runs on four hits. The inning was highlighted by Chad Landry's two-run home run over the left field fence that gave Tech a 3-1 lead. Austin Cranford tripled in the next at-bat and Jason Rainey singled to right field giving Tech the 4-1 lead.
Junior Chad Ertel earned his first win of the season after pitching five innings giving up four hits, one run and three strikeouts. Blake McGinley picked up his fourth save of the season after pitching 2 2/3 innings giving up two hits and two runs.
Texas Tech returns home to face Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and will face Valley City State at 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The game with Valley City State was added this past week to replace one of the games lost with Howard at the start of the year. |
