Baseball Defeats TCU, 16-4

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and left TCU in the dust as the Red Raiders rallied for 16 runs, 16 hits in earning a 16-4 victory Tuesday at Dan Law Field. The victory improves Texas Tech to 14-7 overall and drops TCU to 12-8 overall. Game two of the two-game series is Wednesday at Dan Law Field beginning at 2 p.m.
Texas Tech struck first in the bottom of the first inning with four runs. Kevin Jordan and Junior Rodriguez contributed RBI singles and Mark Austry doubled home two runs. Tech scored one run in the second on a wild pitch and added two in the third on an error by the TCU pitcher and an RBI bunt single by Ryan Ruiz. Tech put the game out of reach in the fourth inning with four runs.
Red Raider starter Jesse Cornejo (4-2) earned the victory after allowing nine hits and four runs (three earned) in 6 1/3 innings. The junior hurler walked four batters and struck out five. Sophomore Steve Watkins pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and struck out four batters and allowed one hit. TCU starter Ryan Ridenour (0-2) earned the loss.
At the plate, two Red Raiders tallied three hits apiece. Rodriguez finished off a 3-4 day with three runs scored and two RBI, Brennan Burns went 3-5 with two RBI and run scored, Jordan went 2-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, Austry went 2-4 with two RBI and Ruiz finished 1-4 with two RBI.
