WACO, Texas - Eighth-ranked Baylor scored two earned runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 3-1 win over No. 20 Texas Tech on Friday evening at Baylor Ballpark in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.

With the loss Texas Tech falls to 16-7 on the year and 0-1 in the Big 12 while Baylor improves to 16-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Baylor starter Steven White kept the Tech hitters at bay most of the night as he struckout a career-high 12 batters despite throwing 128 pitches through seven innings.

Baylor took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Ross Bennett led off the inning with a double over the head of left fielder Scooter Jordan and later scored on a two-out double by Trey Webb.

Texas Tech tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth as junior designated hitter Sean Alexander and first baseman Doug Beck led off with singles to get going. Madison Edwards scored Alexander from third on a fielder's choice but the Red Raiders were unable to take the lead as Josh Haney and Clint McGill struckout to end the inning.
 

 

Baylor took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh on two earned runs thanks to two fielding errors by the Red Raiders. Michael Griffin reach on an error by shortstop T.J. Bruce and then scored from first on a hit by Seth Fortenberry and a fielding error by right fielder Madison Edwards that moved Fortenberry to third. Trey Webb plated Fortenberry with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Steven White earned the win for Baylor and improves to 3-0 on the season. Tech starter Steve Gooch suffered the complete game loss and falls to 3-2. The complete game was the third of the season for Gooch and the fifth of his Texas Tech career.

Texas Tech and Baylor will play the second game of the three-game series on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
