WACO, Texas - No. 20 Texas Tech pounded out nine runs on 11 hits and six Baylor errors as the Red Raiders posted a 9-8 upset over the eighth-ranked Bears on Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Ballpark.

The win improves Tech to 16-7 on the season and gives the Red Raiders their first win in a Big 12 opening series since the 2000 season when Tech dropped Missouri 11-6 on Feb. 26 at Dan Law Field.

Baylor (16-6) committed four errors in the top of the second inning that led to four Texas Tech runs to give the Red Raiders the early lead. The inning began when first baseman Doug Beck reached second a on a throwing error by Baylor shortstop Trey Webb. After a Madison Edwards walk, Cody Fuller loaded the bases when he reached on a fielder's choice and pitcher Trey Taylor botched the throw over to third in an attempt to throw out Beck who was advancing to third. Junior Josh Haney plated the first run of the game on a single that landed in shallow right-center field. The Red Raiders plated three runs in T.J. Bruce's at-bat on what turned out to be a fielder's choice-two error play by the Baylor defense.

The Red Raiders tacked on one more run to extend their lead to 5-0 in the fourth when Josh Haney led off with a double to the gap in left-center field. Haney moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Cooper Fouts and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Scooter Jordan.

Texas Tech's lead quickly evaporated in the bottom of the fourth as the Bears loaded the bases with two hits and a hit-by-pitch and Michael Griffin drove in three runs with a triple to left-center. Seth Fortenberry brought in the fourth run with a double down the left field line and Mark Saccomanno tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Fortenberry from third.

 

 

The Red Raiders were unable to capitalize on a one-out bases loaded situation in the fifth as Baylor reliever Ryan LaMotta retired pinch hitter Sean Alexander on a line out to third and struckout Josh Haney to end the inning.

Baylor chased away starter Juan Razo in the fifth after pitching just four innings allowing five earned runs on six hits and a walk in 74 pitches. The Bears added two unearned runs in the inning off two Texas Tech defensive errors and two Baylor hits to take a 7-5 lead.

Junior third baseman Christian Colonel tied the game for at 7-7 in the top of the sixth on a single through the left side that plated Cooper Fouts and T.J. Bruce who both led off the inning with singles. The hit was just the second of the day for Tech with runners in scoring position.

The Red Raiders took the lead 9-7 in the top of the eighth on a two-out two-RBI single by Evan Shahak that plated T.J. Bruce and Scooter Jordan. Tech sealed the game in the bottom of the ninth allowing just one Baylor runner to score giving Tech the 9-8 win.

Junior Jeff Karstens improved to 5-0 on the season after pitching five innings in relief of starter Juan Razo. Karstens gave up just four hits and one earned run. Zane Carlson suffered the loss for Baylor (0-2) after pitching the final three innings.

Texas Tech and Baylor will play the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
