WACO, Texas - No. 23 Texas Tech scored seven runs in the eighth inning, which included a three-run double by catcher Hunter Redman, and junior Corey Taylor pitched four scoreless relief innings to lead the Red Raiders to a 7-1 series finale victory at Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Tech improves to 16-5 overall and earns its first Big 12 win of the season (1-2) while Baylor drops to 10-9 overall and to 2-1 in Big 12 play.
The Red Raider scored seven runs in the eighth, which started with a dropped fly ball by Baylor defensive replacement freshman Lane Kelly, who was making his career debut, which allowed two runs to score giving Tech a 2-1 lead. Redman followed with a bases-clearing double giving the Red Raiders a 5-1 lead. The Red Raiders were able to push two additional runs across in the eighth.
Taylor (3-0), meanwhile, faced one batter over the minimum from the sixth-to-ninth inning allowing just one base runner - a walk - in the eighth inning.
Redman led the Red Raiders going 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Senior Adam Kirsch went 1-for-5 and reached base safely for the 19th consecutive game.
Tech starting pitcher Cameron Smith took a no decision while allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts in a five-inning start - the first of his career.
Baylor reliever Drew Tolson (0-4) took the loss allowing two runs - both unearned - on one hit with one walk.
Texas Tech will return to action on Tuesday, March 18, as the Red Raiders host Stephen F. Austin for a two-game midweek series with first pitch set for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Wednesday the Red Raiders and Lumberjacks will conclude the midweek set with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
