Baseball defeats Valley City State 23-2

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech used a school-record 12 doubles and two home runs to defeat NAIA Division I Valley City State (N.D.) Wednesday at Dan Law Field. With the victory, Texas Tech improves to 18-8 overall and Valley City State drops to 0-1.
Texas Tech is next in action on Friday against nationally ranked Baylor for a three-game weekend series. Game times are not definite but as of today are set for 7 p.m. on Friday, 3:30 pm. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Weather conditions may change the game times.
Texas Tech belted out a new school record 12 doubles and finished with 24 hits en route to its 23-2 shelling of Valley City State. Sophomore Jesse Cornejo (5-2) earned the victory after pitching six innings and allowing seven hits, one run (one earned) and no walks. He struck out five batters.
Texas Tech (18-8) jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first two innings and never looked back. The Red Raiders scored five runs in the first inning, eight in the second and six in the fifth inning.
Each player in the lineup registered at least one hit. Freshman Miles Durham stood out the most as the rightfielder registered a career high four hits (4-5) and finished with three RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Scooter Martines went 2-4 with three RBI and his first home run of the year, Josh Bard went 2-3 with three RBI and two runs, Kevin Jordan went 2-4 with two RBI and two doubles, Peter Nelson finished 2-3 with two RBI, two runs and a home run and Jason Huth collected two hits in six at-bats.
