Box Score

LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Madison Edwards went 3-for-5 and Texas Tech got key pitching down the stretch as the 23rd-ranked Red Raiders dropped No. 19 Texas A&M 5-4 on Friday night in the Big 12 home opener at Dan Law Field.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak against the Aggies that dates back to the 2001 Big 12 Tournament.

Texas A&M (19-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Aggies picked up two hits and took advantage of a fielding error by first baseman Doug Beck. Jordy Mitchell got the only RBI single of the inning as Erik Schindewolf scored on a wild pitch.

Texas Tech (18-8) answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first as the Red Raiders got four hits and RBI singles from Travis McElroy and Doug Beck.

The Aggies took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth when second baseman Erik Schindewolf belted a two-run home run over the right field wall.

The Red Raiders pulled within one in the bottom half of the fourth on an RBI single by T.J. Bruce that plated Clint McGill from third. Tech tied the game later in the sixth on an RBI single by Madison Edwards that knotted the score at 4-4.

Junior second baseman Josh Haney gave Tech a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh when he dropped a single into shallow left field scoring Cody Fuller who reached on a single and moved to third on two stolen bases.

Jeff Karstens came in to relieve Steve Gooch in the eighth after Gooch had given up a double to A&M's Scott Beerer giving the Aggies a runner in scoring postion with one out. Karstens got Tech out of the inning with two infield groundouts.

Matt Alexander doubled with two outs in the ninth to give A&M some hope but Karstens retired Cory Patton in the next at-bat with a pop up to shortstop T.J. Bruce to end the game.

Junior Steve Gooch picked up the win for Texas Tech after pitching 7 1/3 innings giving up 11 hits but allowed just two earned runs and struckout three in 103 pitches. Sophomore Logan Kensing suffered the loss for Texas A&M as he surrendered 15 hits and five earned runs through 130 pitches in 7 2/3 innings. Junior Jeff Kartsens picked up the save for Texas Tech to give him four on the season.

Texas Tech and Texas A&M will return to the diamond at 2 p.m. on Saturday for game-two of the series at Dan Law Field.
