Tech Gets Series Win Over No. 19 Texas A&M With 6-4 Win
March 23, 2003 LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 23 Texas Tech scored two runs in the seventh and junior second baseman Josh Haney homered in the eighth to give the Red Raiders a 6-4 win over No. 19 Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,713 fans at Dan Law Field. The win gives the Red Raiders the series victory 2-1. The Red Raiders (19-9) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Tech picked up four hits in the inning including an RBI fielder's choice by Doug Beck and an RBI single by Cooper Fouts.
Texas A&M (20-8) took the lead in the top of the fourth when Matt Alexander and Cory Patton led off the inning with singles and Justin Ruggiano cleared the base paths with a three-run homer over the left field bullpen.
Sophomore right fielder Madison Edward picked up a two-out infield single in the bottom of the fifth and later stole second to give Tech a runner in scoring position. Junior Sean Alexander hit a ball in the right-center field gap that went in and out of the glove of A&M center fielder Justin Ruggiano scoring Edwards from second and moving Alexander all the way to third, tying the game at 3-3. The Red Raider took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a two-RBI single through the left side by Travis McElroy. McElroy plated Cooper Fouts who led off the inning with a single and Madison Edwards who reached on a fielder's choice. Junior second baseman Josh Haney gave Tech a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth when he connected on a solo home run that was deposited over the left field wall. Texas A&M loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth before shortstop T.J. Bruce turned a big double play off a ball hit by Matt Alexander to end the game. Junior Jeff Karstens picked up the win for Texas Tech and improved to 6-0 on the year. Karstens pitched the final five innings allowing five hits and one earned run and struckout two. Matt Farnum suffered his first loss of the year and fell to 5-1 after pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. Texas Tech returns to action next weekend as the Red Raiders will travel to Austin for a three-game series against the defending national champion Texas Longhorns. First pitch in the three-game series is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday night. |
