LUBBOCK, Texas -
Jordan Etier and Brandon Loy combined for four RBIs while Cole Green allowed just three runs over 6 2/3 innings to lead No. 8 Texas to an 8-3 win over Texas Tech on Saturday evening in front of 4,010 fans at Dan Law Field. The Texas win evens this series at 1-1 with the rubber match set for noon on Sunday.
The loss snaps Tech's four-game win streak as the Red Raiders fall to 12-13 on the season and to 2-3 in Big 12 play. Texas improves to 17-6 overall and to 3-2 in league play.
The game started out looking like the Red Raiders might be in for another big day offensively as Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. After a leadoff groundout by Jamodrick McGruder, senior shortstop Joey Kenworthy reached on a single and then back-to-back doubles by Michael Reed and Barrett Barnes gave Tech two quick runs.
The Longhorns tied things up in the top of the third after a leadoff walk by Jordan Etier followed by an RBI triple by Cohl Walla and an RBI groundout by Brandon Loy.
Texas took its first lead of this series in the top of the fourth and they never let it slip away. The Longhorns plated three runs on an RBI double by Tant Shepherd and RBI singles from Etier and Loy.
Kenworthy plated Tech's only other run in the bottom of the fifth when he blasted a solo home run over the right field wall. The home run was his third of the year.
Bobby Doran was tagged for six runs on 10 hits and two walks over six innings of work and fell to 0-2 on the season. Cole Green (5-0) picked up the win for Texas after scattering three runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Texas Tech and Texas will conclude this three-game Big 12 series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon and the game will be televised regionally on FSN.
