AUSTIN, Texas - Texas' Omar Quintanilla picked up the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning as the No. 11 Longhorns outlasted No. 20 Texas Tech 5-4 on Friday night at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.

Texas Tech (19-10; 3-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Red Raiders got two hits and took advantage of two Texas errors. T.J. Bruce reached on an error by first baseman Curtis Thigpen and later moved to third on a throwing error by pitcher Danny Muegge. Sean Alexander plated Bruce with an infield groundout to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead. Junior designated hitter Travis McElroy singled up the middle in the next at-bat and stole second to set up the final run of the inning as Cody Fuller singled allowing McElroy to score from second.

The Horns scored two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the scored as the Tech defense allowed leadoff batter Tim Moss to reach on a fielding error by shortstop T.J Bruce. Eric Sultemeier doubled to right center giving Texas runners at second and third. Third baseman Omar Quintanilla and right fielder Dustin Majewski plated both runners with an infield groundout and a fly out to center field respectively.

Texas Tech regained the lead in the top of the seventh as Christian Colonel reached on an error by Texas third baseman J.D. Reininger and Doug Beck reached on a single through the left side to give Tech runners at first and second. Junior second baseman Josh Haney laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt down the first base line to move Colonel and Beck into scoring position. Sophomore catcher Cooper Fouts plated the first run with an RBI groundout and T.J. Bruce followed with a double to right-center to push the Tech lead to 4-2.

 

 

Texas tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth by scoring two runs on three hits including an RBI double by Eric Sultemeier. Omar Quintanilla plated the tying run with an infield RBI groundout that plated Sultemeier from third.

Texas reliever Huston Street and Tech reliever Jeff Karstens held both teams scoreless for three straight innings before Texas began a two-out rally in the bottom of the 12th. Texas second baseman Tim Moss drew a two-out single and Eric Sultemeier followed with a single through the left side to move Moss into scoring position. Texas shortstop Omar Quintanilla ended the game with an RBI single to left field plating Moss for the winning run.

Junior Jeff Karstens suffered the loss for Texas Tech and was the first loss of the season for the San Diego native. Karstens pitched three innings in relief of starter Steve Gooch who pitched 8 2/3 solid innings allowing just seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. Huston Street moved to 2-0 after getting the win for Texas in a career-high four innings of relief.

Texas Tech will look to tie the series on Saturday as the two teams face off at 3 p.m. at Disch-Falk Field.
