No. 11 Texas Scores Six In Seventh And Eighth For 11-5 Win
March 29, 2003 AUSTIN, Texas - Texas' Omar Quintanilla went 3-for-4 with two RBI and the No.11 Longhorns scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat 20th-ranked Texas Tech 11-5 on Saturday afternoon in front of 5,755 fans at Disch-Falk Field. The win clinches Texas' first regular-season series win over the Red Raiders since 1996. Texas took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when shortstop Omar Quintanilla started a two-out rally with a single to left field and right fielder Dustin Majewski followed with a double to center scoring Quintanilla.
Texas Tech (19-11) tied the score in the top of the second when right fielder Madison Edwards reached on a two-base throwing error by Texas first baseman Curtis Thigpen. Edwards was able to score thanks to two wild pitches by Longhorn pitcher J.P. Howell.
The Red Raiders loaded the bases in the top of the third but designated hitter Sean Alexander grounded into a double play that included a force out at home and Tech seemed to have let a perfect opportunity go by. However, third baseman Christian Colonel bailed Tech out of the inning with a single up the middle in the next at-bat that scored Scooter Jordan and Cody Fuller and Tech took its first lead of the afternoon, 3-1. Texas regained the lead when Eric Sultemeier singled with one out and Omar Quintanilla followed with an RBI triple to right-center to put the Longhorns up 4-3. Texas Tech intentionally walked Dustin Majewski in the next at-bat to set up the double play. Texas' Curtis Thigpen hit into what turned out to be double play with Razo throwing out Quintanilla at home and Fouts throwing out Majewski who was trying to get to third. The Red Raiders regained the lead as Tech loaded the bases quickly with no outs and catcher Cooper Fouts plated the first run with an RBI single that dropped into left field. Scooter Jordan gave Tech the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center field giving the Red Raiders a 5-4 lead. Texas center fielder Joe Ferrin tied the game with a two-out RBI single through the right side that plated designated Scott Dodge who doubled earlier in the inning. The Longhorns regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh on another clutch hit by Omar Quintanilla as he doubled to left field scoring Eric Sultemeier giving the Horns a 6-5 lead. Texas pushed its lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the eighth when Eric Sultemeier delivered a bases-loaded two-RBI single up the middle and Dustin Majewski plated two more runs on a two-RBI single with the bases loaded later in the inning. Curtis Thigpen Texas Tech will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday as Texas now leads 2-0. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Disch-Falk Field. |
