March 31, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech erased a 7-3 deficit while scoring five unanswered runs from the sixth-to-eighth inning to defeat TCU 8-7 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Texas Tech (17-13, 4-5 Big 12) snapped a 13-game losing streak to TCU (11-16, 3-6 Big 12) that dated back to 2007. The victory also improved the Red Raiders to 12-4 at home this season.
Two innings later, Tech tied the game on Gutierrez' double down the left-field line and then scored the game-winning run with an RBI groundout to second base by freshman Jarrard Poteete.
The Red Raider bullpen allowed just two runs in 6.1 innings pitched as freshman Justin Bethard (2.2 IP, 2 R), junior Andre Wheeler (2.2 IP, 0 R) and freshman Johnathon Tripp (1.0 IP, 0 R) worked in relief of starting pitcher Matt Withrow (2.2 IP, 5 R).
Wheeler (3-0) earned the win while getting a double-play grounder to get out of the sixth, worked a three-up, three-down seventh inning and left a pair of runners stranded on base in the eighth.
Tripp picked up his third save of the season - the most by a Red Raider freshman in over 16 years - while retiring three consecutive batters in the ninth after the leadoff batter reached on a fielding error.
Barrios - who went 2-for-5 - scored Tech's first three runs in the first-inning with a bases-clearing triple to right field. Barrios led the Red Raiders batting .417 during the three-game series with the Horned Frogs.
Right fielder Devon Conley went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a double and Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
TCU reliever Alex Young (3-3) took the loss allowing both the tying and game-winning run to score in the eighth inning.
Tech will start a five-game road trip on Tuesday, April 2 at New Mexico with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch from Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M. The Red Raiders will then prepare for their third Big 12 road series at Kansas State (April 5-7) before finishing up the road trip at Dallas Baptist (April 9).
