March 31, 2009
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Junior outfielder Michael Reed went 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs while Chad Bettis allowed just one run in 3 1/3 innings to lead Texas Tech to an 8-4 win over No. 18 New Mexico on Tuesday night at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
Texas Tech jumped out on top of the Lobos early as the Red Raiders loaded the bases in the top of the first and ended up clearing them to take a 3-0 lead. With two outs and bases full, junior right fielder Taylor Ashby drove a 3-2 fastball through the right side that scored Joey Kenworthy and Michael Reed. Freshman designated hitter Scott LeJeune scored the final run of the inning as he was able to reach home on a steal attempt by Taylor Ashby between first and second.
With a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth, Ashby picked up his third RBI of the game with a bases-loaded, two-out walk. The very next offering by UNM starter Edwin Carl hit freshman third baseman Justin Berry in the back and that gave the Red Raiders a 5-1 advantage.
Tech pushed across a solo run in the fourth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Chris Richburg that put the Red Raiders ahead 6-2.
With two outs in the sixth and Tech leading 7-3, the Red Raiders turned the game over to closer Chad Bettis. Bettis allowed just one run (in the ninth) over the final 3 1/3 innings and struckout five to grab his fourth save of the year.
Reed gave Tech a five run cushion with two outs in the top of the eighth when he blasted a solo home run over the right field wall. The home run was his first of the season and his fourth hit of the night.
Texas Tech and New Mexico will wrap up their season long series tomorrow afternoon at Isotopes Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (CT) and the Red Raiders lead the season series 2-1.
