April 10, 2007
LUBBOCK, Texas - Doug Thennis and Chris Richburg each went 4-for-5 and Matt Smith picked up his 10th home run of the season to lead Texas Tech to a 17-6 win over Hardin Simmons on Tuesday evening at Dan Law Field.
Tonight's game against the Division III Cowboys was added to the schedule late Sunday afternoon to help offset one of the two games that the Red Raiders have lost to weather this season (TCU and Texas A&M). The win bumped Tech's overall record to 22-13 while Hardin Simmons fell to 18-15.
The Red Raiders put the game out of the way early in the bottom of the second as Tech exploded for eight runs on eight hits. Matt Smith got the fireworks going as he scored Tech's first run of the ballgame on a solo home run to deep left center.
After Hardin Simmons scored three runs in the top of the third, the Red Raiders came firing back in the bottom half of the inning to grab an 11-3 lead.
Doug Thennis and Chris Richburg paced the Tech offense on the evening as both went 4-for-5 and added a pair of RBIs each. Taylor Lamar led Hardin Simmons with a 2-for-4 night at the plate while Ryan Stepp added two RBIs.
Cory Large, making just his second appearance of the season due to injury, earned the win by logging 2 2/3 innings in his second start and improved to 2-0. James Sweatman (2-1) suffered the loss after giving up six runs on five hits over 1 1/3 inning.
Texas Tech returns to Big 12 action on Friday evening when they face the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns in the start of a three-game series at UFCU Disch Falk Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:05 p.m.
