LUBBOCK, Texas - Kansas third baseman Travis Metcalf broke open an 8-8 tie in the top of the ninth with a solo home run over the left-center field wall to give the Kansas Jayhawks a 9-8 win over Texas Tech on Friday night at Dan Law Field.

Texas Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Josh Haney picked up his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot that went over the right field wall.

Kansas tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Casey Spanish RBI single through the left side that plated Ritchie Price.

The Red Raiders regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a Travis McElroy RBI single that scored Scooter Jordan.
 

 

Things went downhill for Tech in the seventh as the Jayhawks scored seven runs on seven hits and one Tech defensive error. The inning included a two-run home run by Ryan Baty.

Texas Tech came charging back in the bottom of the eighth as Tech tied the game by scoring six runs on four hits and took advantage of two Kansas defensive errors. Four different Red Raiders picked up an RBI in the inning and Josh Haney got his third hit of the game that plated two runs.

Jeff Karstens came in to pitch for Tech in the top of the ninth but Travis Metcalf got a hold of a slider and delivered the game winning home run.

Jeff Karstens (7-2) suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he pitched just one inning of relief. Brandon Johnson improved to 6-2 as he was credited with the win for Kansas. Josh Haney led the Tech offensive effort as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a solo home run.

Texas Tech and Kansas will play again at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
