April 12, 2011
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Stephen Hagen and Barrett Barnes both hit home runs to provide Texas Tech with all of the offense it would need in a 4-1 victory over New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon at Isotopes Park.
The Texas Tech (21-13) pitching staff also shined with three relievers combining for five scoreless innings and with four solid innings from starter Jamen Parten. New Mexico (10-23) outhit the Red Raiders (11-6), but left 10 runners on base and went 1-for-10 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
The victory marks the Red Raiders fifth consecutive midweek victory, a first for the program since also winning five in a row during the 2005 season.
Stephen Hagen hit a solo shot over the left-field wall in the second inning for his fourth home run of the season, giving Tech the early 1-0 lead.
The Lobos answered scoring a run in the bottom of the second on a single through the left side, which scored D.J. Petersen who tripled a batter before.
That would be the final run the Lobos would get as Parten pitched four innings before reliever Brennan Stewart (2-0) came in to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts while earning his second win of the season.
Junior right-handed pitcher John Neely pitched two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the season.
After senior Nick Popescu gave Tech a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the fourth, Barnes hit his eighth home run of the season, a towering blast to left-center field for a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
That was the final run of the game as both teams combined for five hits in the final four innings. Popescu was the only Red Raider with multiple hits going 2-for-4. Petersen led all players going 3-for-3 on the afternoon while leading the Lobos.
Texas Tech and New Mexico will complete their midweek two-game series with a 1 p.m. (CT) first-pitch set for Wednesday at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
