Avants Leads Texas Tech Past Hardin-Simmons, 10-6|

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior second baseman Carey Avants tallied a season-high four hits along with three RBI and a solo home run to help lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 10-6 win over Hardin-Simmons on Wednesday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
Texas Tech (23-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by junior Carey Avants and senior Cameron Blair. Avants led the Tech offense with four hits and three RBI and his solo home run in the fourth was his first of the season.
A Tech throwing error in the top of the third inning, led to a four-run rally by Hardin Simmons. The Cowboys scored three unearned runs in the frame and got a two-out, two-RBI single from center fielder Michael Simpson that pushed their lead to 4-2.
The Red Raiders rebounded in the bottom half of the third as Tech fired back with three runs of its own to take a 5-4 lead. Freshman designated hitter Josh Wilson plated two runs in the inning with a hard-hit single up the middle.
Tech went on to score five more runs in the fourth through the seventh innings to earn the 10-6 win. Junior third baseman Joey Callender added four hits on the day and Cody Fuller's two stolen bases moved him into third place on the all-time list at Texas Tech with 74.
Junior left-hander Dustin Richardson earned the win for Texas Tech and improved to 1-0 while Nick Kincaid (3-5) was tagged with the loss for Hardin-Simmons.
Texas Tech returns to Big 12 action this weekend as the Red Raiders travel north to Manhattan, Kan., for a three-game series with Kansas State. First pitch on Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday and concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
