Fouts Pitches Tech Past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5-1
April 20, 2002 LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior right-handed pitcher Nathan Fouts tossed his first career complete game and struckout a team season-high 11 batters and scattered just four hits to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 5-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field. With the win, Texas Tech picked up its 30th win of the season and now stands at 30-16 overall while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to 16-27. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Humberto Aguilar that drove in Roberto Santana who drew a two-out single to keep the Islanders alive in the inning.
Texas Tech junior second baseman Joel Buchenauer drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third and scored on an infield groundout by Scooter Jordan to tie the score at 1-1.
Junior Jon Slack got an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to give Tech a 2-1 lead and senior catcher Willie Durazo added two more runs on a bases loaded single through the right side. The Red Raiders took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Jon Slack. Gera Alvarez extended his current hitting streak to 27 games with an infield single in the inning. After allowing two hits and a run in the first inning, Tech starter Nathan Fouts pitched perfectly through the next six innings as he retired 18-straight batters. Fouts gave up two more hits in the eighth but was able to get out of the jam and improved his record to 6-5 on the season. Michael Shandler suffered the loss for the Islanders and fell to 0-3 on the season. Texas Tech and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will play the final game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech leads the series 2-0. |
