Box Score

LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore catcher Cooper Fouts went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI to help lead Texas Tech to a 16-9 upset of the No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers on Turn Back the Clock Night in front of 3,723 fans at Dan Law Field. The win marked the 1,200th all-time win for Texas Tech through 54 seasons of baseball.

Nebraska (31-11; 13-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Matt Hoper delivered a two-out double and Alex Gordon singled him home.

Texas Tech (25-18; 7-11) took the lead in the bottom of the third when Cooper Fouts delivered a two-RBI single to tie the score at 1-1. A fielder's choice by Scooter Jordan plated the second run of the inning and Tech took the lead 2-1.

The Huskers regained the lead at 4-2 in the top of the fourth when Matt Wells hit a three-run home run with two outs.

Nebraska added one more run in the top of the sixth to push its lead to three runs (5-2) before Tech began its comeback in the bottom half of the inning.

Texas Tech tagged the Husker pitching staff for nine runs and seven hits while taking advantage of two defensive errors. Senior Scooter Jordan gave Tech the lead in the inning when he delivered a two-RBI triple to put Tech ahead 6-5. T.J. Bruce and Cooper Fouts each totaled two hits in the inning while Fouts also plated three runs. The nine runs in the inning was the most by Texas Tech ever in Big 12 play and is one run short of the school record of 10 set earlier this season against West Texas A&M.

Nebraska's Jake Mullinax ended a stellar outing by Nathan Fouts in the eighth as he picked up an RBI single to pull the Nebraska to within five (11-6). Jeff Karstens came in and recorded two outs to end the Husker scoring threat.

Texas Tech put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 16-6 lead into the top of the ninth. The Huskers got a three-run home run by Curtis Ledbetter in the top of the ninth to make the final score 16-9.

Nathan Fouts (4-4) earned the win for Texas Tech as he pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing just three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six on 139 pitches. Aaron Marsden (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Nebraska as he allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits.

Texas Tech and Nebraska will play the second game of the three-game series at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
