LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior designated hitter Brent Thomas went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI to lead Texas Tech to a 10-2 win over New Mexico on Tuesday night at Dan Law Field.
The win moves Texas Tech to 26-14 on the season while New Mexico falls to 19-22.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Tech took advantage of a wild start by freshman Tyler Cales. Cales walked two batters, gave up three hits and scored two runners on wild pitches that gave Tech a 3-1 lead.
The Red Raiders put the game out of reach by scoring five runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Junior designated hitter Trey Stewart helped key a three-run rally in the fourth when he laced a two-RBI single to left field. Junior Brent Thomas came into the game as the designated hitter in the fifth and picked up two of his game-high four RBI in the frame with a two-RBI single.
Thomas padded the Tech lead in the bottom of the seventh when he belted a two-run homer over the fence in left-center field. The home run was his second of the season and plated Cameron Blair who reached in the previous at-bat on a two-out triple to center.
Senior Tanner McElroy (2-2) earned the win for Texas Tech as he tossed two shutout innings of relief allowing just one hit. Tyler Cales (0-1) was charged with the loss for New Mexico as he gave up six earned on five hits over four innings of work.
The Red Raiders return to action on Wednesday afternoon as the play host to the Mustangs of the College of the Southwest at 1 p.m. This game has been added to make up for the Sunday cancellation against Kansas.
